We want everyone to feel welcome when they come to Nebraska Zen Center (NZC) for the first time. If you’re new to Buddhist practice or to practicing with a community, we can support you in several ways .
Introduction to Zen Class: The best way to learn more about Zen Buddhism, Zen meditation, and all aspects of practice here at NZC is to attend our Intro to Zen class. NZC offers the class four times a year, usually on a Saturday morning from 9 am to noon. We cover everything from Buddhist history to finding a good sitting position. You can learn more about our Intro class and when you can take it by clicking below.
Orientation Before Sunday Open Zen: On most Sundays, NZC offers Open Zen, a morning practice period that includes thirty minutes of zazen (seated meditation) followed by a short service and a dharma talk in person or via Zoom. We usually offer tea or coffee and conversation afterwards, giving everyone an opportunity to socialize and ask questions.
Newcomers are welcome to participate in a short orientation before Sunday Open Zen. If you’re coming to NZC for the first time, simply email us at heartlandtemple@nebraskazencenter.org a few days ahead to let us know. Plan to arrive at 9:15 am so a priest or community member can meet you and provide some basic instruction before sitting starts at 10 am. This short orientation is also useful for people who have been practicing at home or at other Zen temples.
Other: You are welcome at NZC any time. Signing up for our Intro class or coming for orientation on Sunday simply allows us to provide you with more support. We are always happy to see you. Please join us!
You can also attend Sunday Open Zen via Zoom to get acquainted with our practice style before you attend in person. Click on the box below for more information.
