Buddha's Birthday Retreat
Buddha's Birthday Retreat
April 5, 2024 5:00 pm - April 6, 2024 8:00 pm
Buddha’s Birthday Retreat:
Friday, April 5, at 5 pm to Saturday, April 6, at 8 pm
The Buddha’s path to awakening—the simple practice of just sitting—is available right now, in this moment. We can sit with what is and find greater intimacy with ourselves and the world around us.
Join us for a three-day sesshin honoring Buddha’s birthday, led by Rev. Daishin McCabe and our resident priest-in-training, Rev. Tazian Alford.
Sesshin, which translates from the Japanese as “collecting the heart-mind,” provides a rare chance to step into a sanctuary of stillness. You can close the door for a while on the world’s cacophony and appreciate the freedom and spaciousness of life in the present.
The sesshin will include multiple periods of sitting and walking meditation; dharma talks; traditional, oryoki-style meals; Zen chanting liturgy; temple care (also known as mindful cleaning); body practice (eg, yoga); rest breaks; and an opportunity to meet one-on-one with the teacher. In sesshin, we refrain from unnecessary speech and settle into silence.
$70 for members, $90 for nonmembers/ pay what you can

River of Joy Retreat with Koji Acquaviva
River of Joy Retreat with Koji Acquaviva
April 13, 2024 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
9 am–4 pm
Relaxing Into the River of Joy Retreat
For many of us, the most difficult thing about zen practice is its physical rigor. We are often taught implicitly or explicitly that if we're going to do this practice we're going to have to learn to sit still, sit up straight, and not move.
However, Dogen Zenji says in Shobogenzo Gakudo Yojinshu, “Difficult though it may be to break our bones and crush our marrow, the most difficult thing is to make our mind balanced.” We may wonder if all the achy early mornings really have anything to do with recognizing the nature of mind.
In this beginner-friendly daylong retreat, participants will have the freedom to explore a variety of meditation postures, prioritizing ease and naturalness. Periods of meditation will be a bit shorter than usual so that our minds and bodies can remain fresh and buoyant throughout the day.
This retreat will be oriented specifically toward practices that deepen our recognition of the clear and luminous quality of mind and foster a positive and enthusiastic feeling toward zazen as a gift we can give ourselves, not an attempt to turn a bad me into a good me.
Nonmembers: $100 / Members: $75 / Your level (pay what you can best afford)

Sunday Open Zen - dharma talk by Rev. Koji Acquaviva
Sunday Open Zen - dharma talk by Rev. Koji Acquaviva
April 14, 2024 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Entrusting, Not Accomplishing: The Zen Path of Ease and Acceptance
Many spiritual teachings we encounter convey to us that individualism has limited usefulness on the spiritual path, yet in contemplative traditions we can often be left feeling that meditation is an endeavor to overcome or conquer aspects of ourselves.
In this talk Koji will expound on an approach to Zen practice where we don’t strive to overcome or improve anything about ourselves, but rather we sit easefully in the recognition of our own wholeness. This is a particularly helpful way of practice for those who have grown weary of trying to transform themselves into something “better” and want to open to the awe and satisfaction of simply being alive.
Open Zen, 10 am–12 pm:
Zazen and dharma talk
Followed by conversation over tea or coffee and work practice
**Please arrive by 9:45 and be seated on your cushion by 9:55.
We will be chanting the Heart Sutra.

Sunday Open Zen - Zoom Dharma Talk by Daishin
Sunday Open Zen - Zoom Dharma Talk by Daishin
April 21, 2024 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Dharma of Food
Zen master Dogen wrote, “Just let dharma be the same as food, and food be the same as dharma.” To equate food with the Buddha’s teaching is to give it the highest respect. However, in modern day America we have an unprecedented abundance of food, so we don’t think twice about throwing it away. What does this mean for Zen practitioners?
Daishin will help us explore this question, as well as the connection between nutrition, meditation, and the bodhisattva precepts.
Open Zen, 10 am–12 pm:
Zazen and dharma talk
Followed by conversation over tea or coffee and work practice
**Please arrive by 9:45 and be seated on your cushion by 9:55.
We will be chanting the Heart Sutra.
Those joining from home can find the NZC Sutra Book here.
