49th Day Memorial Service for Daikan Nonin Chowaney
The sangha of Nebraska Zen Center wishes to express its deep gratitude to Rev. Teijo Munnich for leading us in a wonderful memorial service for our longtime teacher and abbot, Rev. Nonin Chowaney, on Saturday, October 1, 2022. Our special thanks also to Rev. Daishin McCabe for his key role in facilitating and assisting in the event. The presence of Nonin’s family, dharma heir Kyoki Roberts, ordained students Shuji Valdene Mintzmyer and Kanho Doug Dittman, and special friends and neighbors the Font-Gabels—along with the attendance via Zoom of many of his fellow Zen teachers—made the gathering profound and meaningful. We were delighted to have so many new and old friends and sangha members join us to remember and honor our head priest for 25 years. Nonin’s ashes, along with the ashes of his beloved dogs Sammy and Buddy, were interred in the earth of Nebraska Zen Center in a private ceremony on Sunday, October 2, 2022.
A recording of the memorial service is available here.
