Sunday Open Zen is a Sunday morning period devoted to a variety of practice opportunities, incorporating the Three Treasures: Buddha, in the form of zazen; dharma in the form of a dharma talk or dharma discussion; and sangha, in the form of tea time and conversation with others in the community of practitioners, as well as occasional work practice.
** Start time for Sunday Open Zen may vary. Please check the calendar for start times and format. Plan to arrive 15 minutes ahead of start time, and be seated on your cushion before the five-minute han strikes.
Zazen instruction before Sunday Open Zen
If you are new to Nebraska Zen Center or would like to receive—or brush up on—zazen instruction, we invite you to arrive at 9:15 am on Sundays. Shinkyu will introduce you to the Zen center and show you how to sit zazen before Open Zen begins at 10.
Most Sundays:
Sunday Open Zen from 10 am – 12 pm: 30 minutes of zazen and a dharma talk, followed by conversation over tea or coffee and, frequently, a work period. Dharma talks by guest teachers, either in person or via Zoom, or student talks.
Special Services:
On some weeks we will hold special services, such as the World Peace Ceremony or ceremonies to mark important Buddhist dates. 10 am – 12 pm.
Just Sitting:
Once a month, we dedicate the Sunday time period to Just Sitting, a concentrated block of zazen. Just Sitting will start at 9 am and consist of three 35-minute periods of zazen, separated by 10-minute periods of kinhin (walking meditation). We will end with a short service followed by tea and conversation.
